In this short a Fresh Cars PHV driver shares their own experience of renting from us and driving for private hire in Singapore. It is one of several driver stories we have filmed; none are scripted, and the driver speaks for themselves.

Key takeaways

  • ✓Unscripted driver story about switching to private hire driving
  • ✓PHV rental from $420/week or $1,700/month, everything but fuel and ERP included
  • ✓Four-hour replacement guarantee so a breakdown does not cost a day of income
  • ✓Start weekly, switch to monthly any time, no penalty

Why drivers make the switch to private hire

The drivers who rent from Fresh Cars come from every kind of background — shift work, retail, the uniformed services, running a small business. The reasons for switching are consistent: control over hours, income that scales with effort, and no boss. The reason they hesitate is also consistent: the fixed weekly cost of the car. That fixed cost, and what you get for it, is the practical side of private hire driving that this page covers.

What matters in practice is the all-in cost and what happens when something goes wrong. A Fresh Cars PHV rental from $420/week or $1,700/month includes commercial insurance, road tax, servicing, unlimited mileage and a four-hour replacement guarantee. The replacement guarantee is the part drivers mention most: a car in the workshop is a day without income unless a replacement turns up quickly.

Getting started as a PHV driver in Singapore

You need a Private Driver's Vocational Licence (PDVL) from LTA, which requires a Class 3 or 3A licence held for at least two years, a clean record and a short course. Applications typically take two to four weeks. With a PDVL in hand, renting takes a day: send us your PDVL, licence, NRIC or FIN and a card for the deposit, collect the car at Kaki Bukit, add it to your Grab, Gojek, Tada or Ryde account and start taking jobs.

Most new drivers start on a weekly plan to test the platform and switch to monthly once they know their hours. There is no penalty for switching. Drivers who clock high mileage usually move to a hybrid — from $511/week — because the fuel saving is roughly $30–40 a week and the car is newer.
